The Sacraments
We are a sacramental church. We believe God is actively present in the world and in us. In the sacraments we realize God’s presence and the gifts that He has given us. We recognize two great sacraments of the Gospel – Baptism and the Holy Eucharist – and five other sacramental rites – Confirmation, Holy Matrimony, Reconciliation of a Penitent, Unction and Ordination.
Holy Baptism
Baptism is the sacrament by which God adopts us as His own children and makes us members of His Church by water and the Holy Spirit. It is required that candidates for Holy Baptism (or their parents and godparents in the case of infants) renounce Satan, repent of their sins and accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. All candidates have sponsors whose job is to help the newly baptized in their new life. Infants are baptized so that they may share citizenship within God’s Holy Church. As the bond, which God establishes in Baptism, is indissoluble, the Anglican Church recognizes any Baptism done in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Holy Eucharist or Holy Communion
The Holy Eucharist is the sacrament commanded by Christ to remember His life, death and resurrection until His coming again. We believe that through the Holy Eucharist God’s presence becomes real in the bread and wine as the body and blood of Christ. By receiving communion we are forgiven of our sins, strengthened in our union with Christ and with one another and are given a foretaste of the heavenly banquet which is our nourishment in eternal life. All baptized persons are welcome to receive Holy Communion at St. Timothy's.
Confirmation
Confirmation allows a baptized person, who has been instructed in the Christian faith to make a mature commitment to Christ and to receive strength from the Holy Spirit through prayer and the laying on of hands by a Bishop.
Holy Matrimony
Holy Matrimony is the sacrament of Christian marriage in which a man and a woman make their promises before God and enter into a lifelong union that is blessed by Him.
Reconciliation of a Penitent
Reconciliation, sometimes referred to as confession, allows for a person to repent his or her sins to God in the presence of a priest and gives the assurance of pardon and the grace of absolution.
Unction
Unction is a special blessing for those who are sick or desire special prayers. Those desiring unction are anointed with oil and receive laying on of hands through which God’s grace is given for the healing of spirit, mind and body.
Ordination
Ordination is the rite in which God gives authority and the grace of the Holy Spirit to those being made Bishops, priests and deacons through prayer and the laying on of hands by a Bishop.
